Reading books at Springfield
Dear Parents / Carers,
Here at Springfield we are determined that every child will learn to read and become ‘hooked on books’. In order to achieve this, we will be sending some children home with two books; a book for pleasure and fluency and a book they can sound out (decodable).
Books for pleasure and fluency
Hopefully you will be familiar with these books as they are the colour banded books that children have been bringing home. When a child reaches a RED TED milestone an adult will check their reading book and put them on the correct colour level.
Children will be kept on Pink or Red level books until they can fluently read the first and second 50 High Frequency Words. This is to build a bank of common words that allows children to immerse themselves in books.
Please do not be alarmed if your child moves back to a lower level in the books for pleasure and fluency.
Decodable books (books that the children can sound out)
These books will be assigned to children who are at the early stages of reading and are using Phonics to support them. Books will be carefully allocated to individual children to help embed the sounds that they have been learning.
When sharing these books with your child, please look at and share the inside cover with your child. This is where you will find the target sounds found within the book and any tricky words that they may face.
Please continue to record any reading your child does at home in their reading diaries. Reading of either book will count towards their RED TED.
If you have any questions or would like advice on reading with your child, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
