History at Springfield

The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our HISTORY curriculum:

Our Approach (Intent):

At Springfield, our intent is that our teaching of History will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We aim for it to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and to know more about the people that came before them. We aim to enable children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. We believe that studying history improves our decision making and judgment. History also teaches us how to learn from the mistakes of others. History helps us understand change and societal development. Through the teaching of History, we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

History lessons focus on developing historical skills and children working as historians. We intend for our children to have real life experiences and learn about history in an active and creative way. Links to Geography and other subject areas are also explored. The planning of learning always begins with the skills and knowledge that needs to be taught and enrichment opportunities and opportunities to apply learning are carefully mapped.

How History is implemented:

Currently we:

  • Ensure that the teaching of History is delivered in a practical and engaging way;
  • Deliver practical opportunities to discover interesting parts of History before the expectation of writing;
  • Deliver our history curriculum within our half-termly topics, which cover a broad range of objectives;
  • Support the teaching and learning of key History vocabulary via displays within the classroom;
  • Use artefacts and resources to stimulate, engage and structure discussion and exploration;
  • Give instant feedback regarding their knowledge, through our core skills approach to teaching and learning;
  • Provide opportunities for practical home-learning to further support knowledge and understanding;
  • Use the education library service as a resource to ensure that there is a range of historical texts, books and pictures for the children to explore;
  • Use the website as a tool to show our practical experiences and learning to parents.
  • Create knowledge organisers to show the coverage of knowledge for the half-term.
  • Host a quiz at the beginning and end of each topic to assess understanding.
